Welcome to the Writing TV Drama course at Creative Writing Ink!
We all enjoy watching TV drama, but what goes into writing a script that truly captures and engages an audience? This course is mainly designed for new writers who may not have written a script before, but all writers are welcome. It is a supportive and encouraging space where you’ll develop an idea for a script, build your characters and story, and take your project through the development process until it is ready to sell.
Across six modules, we will explore the foundations of scriptwriting, including its origins, formatting, and storytelling techniques. You will work towards creating your own original pilot script for a TV series you have designed. We will also look at the industry, covering ways to pitch and sell your script, along with how to work as a TV writer in today’s market.
So whether you dream of writing the next Breaking Bad, Pose, Russian Doll, Dead to Me, or Slow Horses, this course could be perfect for you. If you want to learn more about scriptwriting, why not sign up?
Course Outline:
Week One – Writing for a Visual Medium
We look at the origins of scriptwriting, the different types of scripts, and what you need to create a strong story idea. You’ll complete a worksheet for your story and be introduced to the power of asking “What if?”
Week Two – Loglines, Characters and Story
In the second week, we explore what makes a strong character in TV drama. You’ll also create a logline for your drama, one of the most effective tools for capturing the heart of your story.
Week Three – Scripts
How do you shape storytelling within a script? What formatting rules should you remember while writing your story? This week also covers useful tips, techniques, and scriptwriting secrets.
Week Four – Conflict, Reveals and Twists
In week four, we show how conflict drives a story and keeps an audience fully engaged. You’ll also learn how to introduce reveals and twists that leave viewers eager to find out what happens next.
Week Five – Working as a TV Writer
In the penultimate week, we’ll guide you through the process of working as a TV writer, using case studies of successful writers in the industry. You’ll also learn what happens when a script is accepted for production and gets “greenlit.”
Week Six – The Next Steps
In the final week, you’ll explore different techniques for writing a script and learn what makes a strong pitch. We’ll cover pitch decks, treatments, spec scripts, and pilots, while also answering the age-old question: do I need an agent?
