What to Anticipate Week by Week

Module One: Characterising the self
In this first module we’ll look at how to characterise the most important individual of any memoir: you. Through a series of writing tasks, we’ll look at how your personality and presence can be revealed through aspects such as sensory experience and perception.

Module Two: Setting
For our second module we’ll look at the role of setting in memoir, asking how we can bring places to life, and what they might be telling the reader about ourselves.

Module Three: Peripheral characters and dialogue
In this third module we’ll look at how other characters can add extra colour and interest to our life narratives, and how to write succinct, engaging dialogue.

Module Four: Narrative voice
In our fourth module we’ll look at how voice functions in memoir, and explore some of the strategies and problem-solving techniques used by authors to express themselves even when it’s difficult.

Module Five: Beginnings and endings
In our penultimate module we’ll look at how to start and end a memoir, and how to begin arranging and structuring a narrative. Here you’ll be encouraged to play around with chronology, and experiment with how to approach your story from novel or unexpected angles.

Module Six: Editing
In this final module we’ll look at the different phases of editing, and what it asks of us as writers; you’ll also have the opportunity to craft some of your own writing into a finished form you’re happy with.
