How to Master the Creative Writing Process: A Beginners Guide
Do you long to pen beautiful prose like those of your favorite author? Do you yearn to capture and hold the attention and emotions of your audience until you decide to conclude your story, thus releasing them from your captivating grasp? Luckily, every craft has its own process, as does creative writing. All you need to get started on your journey to mastering this craft is to obtain a creative “roadmap” of sorts—finding a mentor or reliable tutor is also a great way to put your Creative writing in the fast lane to mastery.
What is the creative writing process, and how can you master it?
The Creative Writing process is one that follows a predetermined plan or “roadmap,” and its mastery depends on how well a writer pays attention to the map they are given. The correct stops must be taken, or one may risk losing themselves in their own words, drowning in a sea of murky characters and an even murkier narrative.
A Beginners Guide to the Creative Writing Process
Every good process and map has a clear starting location. Sometimes, trying to locate a starting place can be the most daunting part of creative writing. One great way to find your starting locale is to set reasonable and meaningful goals for yourself. This is incredibly helpful in helping the starting phase feel more possible and less terrifying.
The first stop on our roadmap is to take some time to think about inspiration. Are you struggling with manifesting ideas? Maybe you’re looking in the wrong place. Inspiration is everywhere, and as a writer, it is of the utmost importance to realize how just about anything can work its way into a successful story. Don’t underestimate the seemingly mundane events that surround daily life. Listen to them, observe them, and use them for good. Once you have an idea for your story, the second thing you’re going to want to do is to focus on characters. Who is telling the story? Is it one of the characters, or is an omniscient narrator employed who knows everything about every character and event in the narrative?
The next stop on our creative roadmap is to explore description. An enchanting description can take any scene and make it entrancing. Paying attention to sensory details can give your writing the boost it needs to jump off the page and dazzle your readers. Just remember, when in doubt, describe!
After description, the next stop ahead will center around the narrative structure. Essential questions to ask yourself at this point in your journey are: How can my story’s structure affect the overall narrative? Which rules are justifiable to break in order to insert a surprising plot twist or exhilarating turn? A writer must learn basic story structure before using structure as a tool. You might find that when you tinker with the structure of your story, new ideas for twists and turns may unexpectedly appear during this stop on our map.
