An Alabaster Knight
Kathryn Ratzko

Still as stone,
hands on your chest,
an alabaster knight;
protector, warrior
who once
slayed dragons.

Dawn is here.
The ferryman still waits;
a bittersweet relief.
I stretch.
Cramped on
a makeshift bed,
I ache.

I lean in close
to hear your barely breath
and whisper that I have to go.
An hour I say, an hour.

I’m holding on to selfishness.

I turn away;
the journey is not mine.
Perhaps you need
to sail the lake to Avalon
alone.
