What to Look Forward To:

Throughout the course, you’ll receive weekly modules, requiring an estimated 2-3 hours of your time per week. Each module comprises text lessons that you can conveniently access at any time during the week, offering a flexible schedule that suits any lifestyle without the constraints of set class times. On the course start date, your tutor will send you the first module via email, so remember to check your Spam/Junk folder to avoid missing any vital information.

Here’s an overview of what each week will encompass:

Week 1: Get Cracking

The main aim of every week is to write. In this first module elements of plot and theme will be the focus. You should know where you’re going with the novel and will make a clean start.

Week 2: Character

How are your characters shaping up? Let’s talk a bit about that. Character and plot are completely intertwined. You’ll be writing, of course, but with characterisation in mind.

Week 3: Dialogue

The half-way point, and you’ll be powering through the pain-barrier. This week you’ll already be well into the flow of your novel, and the module contains top tips for good, effective dialogue.

Week 4: Shutting out the World

This module is all about techniques to overcome writers’ block and distractions that might prevent you from writing, which is, of course, the priority.

Week 5: Setting and Voice

Your setting isn’t just a backdrop to the plot, it’s also an important aspect. This module encourages you to really consider this aspect this week, and the way in which your narrative voice is developing.

Week 6: The Final Sprint to Editing

Your final sprint to the end of your first draft. You’ve done it – well done. But you’re not quite finished yet. In this final module, you’ll work on your final synopsis, your novel outline (or ‘pitch’) and will begin thinking about the editing process.
