Competition Information

The Wells Festival of Literature’s Writing Competitions will open for entries from 1st April.

Open Poetry

  • No theme
  • Maximum lines 40
  • Entry fee: £8
  • Judge: Clare Shaw
  • Prizes: £1,000, £500 and £250. £100 for the best entry in the category for a local poet.

Young Poets

  • No theme
  • Maximum lines 40
  • Entry fee: £3
  • Judge: Julia Webb
  • Prizes: £200, £150 and £100. Winners receive a year’s membership to The Poetry Society.

Short Story

  • No theme
  • 1,000 to 2,000 words
  • Entry fee £8
  • Judge Carole Burns
  • Prizes: £750, £300 and £200. £100 in the category for best local author.

Book For Children

  • Age range 8 years and up, to include Young Adults
  • The first 3 chapters or the first 30 pages, whichever is the shortest, plus a synopsis
  • No theme
  • Entry fee £8
  • Judge: Catherine Bruton
  • Prizes: £750, £300 and £200. £100 in the category for best local entry.

Deadline: 30th June for all categories except the Young Poets, which closes on 31st July
