The John McGivering Writing Prize 2026

Competition Information

The John McGivering Writing Prize 2026 and Competition for Younger Writers will open for entries on 1 March.

Submission Guidelines

  • Theme: Supernatural.
  • Entries must be connected to Kipling’s writings and/or his life
  • Entries should be a maximum of 2500 words, excluding the title
  • Entries must be original and unpublished
  • Younger Writers competition for those aged between 12 and 17 years

Judges: Jan Montefiore, Mary Hamer, and Sarah LeFanu

Entry fee: £8 and £5 for younger writers

Prizes: 

  • First Prize £350, Second prize £100, and Third Prize £50
  • Prizes for Younger Competition: first prize of £75, and £25 for the runner-up

Deadline: 1 May 2026 at 11.59 pm, BST.
