Course Outline
This Children’s Poetry Writing Course introduces young learners to the world of creative poem writing. Across six lessons, it includes a range of activities and guidance to help children build confidence and enjoy expressing themselves through poetry. By the end of the course, each child will have explored and created poems in a variety of styles. The course is best suited for ages 7–12.
Lesson 1: Getting started
The opening lesson introduces key creative writing basics. With simple, beginner-friendly activities, it supports children who are new to writing and helps them take their first steps in creating their own poems.
Lesson 2: Exploring poems
In this lesson, children look at poems they already enjoy. They’ll think about what makes those poems appealing and have a go at writing their own pieces inspired by them.
Lesson 3: Writing about yourself
This lesson encourages children to write a poem about themselves. They’ll learn how to bring their writing to life by using the senses, along with tips on voice, character and adding personal touches such as familiar expressions.
Lesson 4: Describing places
Here, children focus on writing about settings. They’ll build on earlier skills to describe both real and imagined places, using sensory detail to make their poems more vivid.
Lesson 5: Telling stories through poetry
This lesson introduces storytelling in poems. Children will learn how to include dialogue, shape a simple narrative and build a sense of tension in their writing.
Lesson 6: Trying new styles
The final lesson explores different creative approaches to poetry, including shape poems and humorous verse, giving children the chance to experiment and have fun with form.
