The Scratch A4 1000-Word Short Story Competition is open for entries.

Submission Guidelines

  • Open to short stories, 1,000 words or less.

Judges: 

  • Gurnaik Johal – Winner of the Somerset Maugham Award and shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award.
  • Emily Fish – Hutchinson Heinemann, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
  • Tom Conaghan – Publisher at Scratch Books.

Entry fee: £4

Prize: Be one of six finalists whose stories are read in Soho on Saturday, 6th June.

Deadline: 25th April, 2026
